| The hardest part about leaving on an adventure is saying goodbye to loved ones. This time it seemed to hurt more than usual. I don’t know if it is related to age, the length of this particular adventure or the additional unknowns/perceived risks of this itinerary. All I know is it hurts. Before I forced myself to look forward and concentrate on the trip ahead I felt obligated to remind Clara we can still change our minds and turn around. She quickly shot down that suggestion before I could get all the words voiced. Her determination was clear and I knew there was nothing more to say on the matter.
We headed straight to Arizona to my folk’s place. It is a great place to start an adventure into Mexico. It also got Clara and I talking about my old high school stomping grounds. She seemed genuinely interested as I shared some of the more colorful memories from that era.
We spent a day recouping from the 1000 mile drive the day before. We also took time to unpack, re-sort and repack until we came up with a final workable solution. The amount of space available for storage on a motorcycle is very limited. Somehow, we got all the things we felt we absolutely had to have over the next two months packed on the bike. We also took time to dine out at our favorite spots before turning our taste buds to flavors from south of the border.
Anticipation and excitement are rapidly building. We can feel it with every breathe we take. Tomorrow we leave the comfort and safety of the United States of America. With open hearts and minds we are prepared to embrace the unknown experiences that await us in the foreign countries on our destination.
We’ll catch up on the other side of the border. Here we go…
